DIGITAL ELEA | SPRINGBOARD

Energising our minds... English language project-based learning for 12 -17 year olds

Digital ELEA (English Language Experience and Adventure) is a 4-day online English language programme focused on developing real-world English communication skills through project-based learning.

Following on from the excellent feedback received, and sold-out success of our August 2020 Digital ELEA programme, our latest innovation ‘Springboard’ has once again been developed by Peartree Languages – one of Cardiff’s longest established EFL course providers, in collaboration with UWC Atlantic – the founding college of the UWC movement committed to shaping changemakers of the future.

Digital ELEA Springboard will use similar principles, but completely new topics and materials from previous or future ELEA programmes and as such is fully recommended and suitable for past and future ELEA graduates.

As part of Digital ELEA Springboard, you will enjoy nine hours of English language classes based on the theme of ‘Energising Our Minds’ and mapped to the UN Sustainable Development goal of ‘Good Health and Well-being’. Students will be separated into group virtual classrooms, with a maximum of 12 students per group, with the average being between 8-12. This allows you to benefit from flexible learning to develop your problem-solving skills and to give you the confidence in your ability to communicate through the medium of English. You will use the ‘Zoom’ platform and enjoy all the features of this learning environment including interacting directly with your teacher, working in smaller groups or pairs with your classmates through ‘breakout rooms’, using screen annotations, voting in polls and sharing your screen when giving your ideas. Your teacher will have plenty of experience of teaching virtually and may also use other online tools, including Edmodo, to complement your lessons. A brand new feature of Springboard is the ‘End of Course Social’, which will provide a safe, yet freer space for participants to interact and make more personal connections with other classmates from all over the world!

All of the Digital ELEA teachers are qualified as a minimum to the standards of the British Council for the Teaching of English in the UK.

CLASSES

The classes on Digital ELEA are not traditional language lessons! Our theme will give you the chance to explore many topics such as ways to keep our bodies and minds fit and healthy, developing mindfulness, analysing global sustainable health initiatives and the impact of Covid on our wellness – through and using the English language. Your teacher will focus on helping you to develop 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, debating and presenting. By the end of the week, you will have worked with your classmates on a project that you will present to the virtual class and your teacher. The task-based lessons will help you to develop your ideas and teach you the English language words and structures that you will need to give an effective presentation.

At the end of the course, you will receive a digital certificate and remember, Digital ELEA is accredited by the British Council for the Teaching of English in the UK, so you will be able to show this certificate back in your home country as proof of your attendance on this dynamic, thought-provoking course!

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

As part of Digital ELEA Springboard, on Tuesday and Wednesday, you can choose to take part in a morning or evening social activity from the comfort of your own home.

The social activities comprise of:

  • PHYSICAL MOVEMENT

To take part, all that is needed is enough space to spin around in! This interactive activity aims to get your blood pumping, your mind relaxing and your tongue wagging the English language. The session will be a combination of HIIT workouts suitable for various levels as well as guided mindfulness exercises using hotspot views of our beautiful 122-acre campus.

  • VIRTUAL ARCHERY

The walls of our 12th-century castle have witnessed much combat skill throughout the years – will your skills go down in history? Using the English language, you must navigate the ELEA Team to aim, shoot and launch an arrow to get the perfect bullseye. This interactive session will focus on team-building exercise and other stimulating challenges.
