UWC Atlantic Orchestral Course for Young Musicians 2024

The UWC Atlantic Orchestral Course for Young Musicians 2024 is a fully-funded course open to students from South Wales in school years 10-13 and takes place at UWC Atlantic College (St Donat’s Castle) on Sunday 22 September from 2pm-6pm.

The course promises to be a day of exploration, skill-sharing, and music-making, all against the beautiful backdrop of St Donat’s Castle on the Welsh coast.
Young musicians will join together to play alongside students and staff from UWC Atlantic College and the afternoon is led by a team of professional practitioners from UWC Atlantic College and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

There will be a combination of individual instrumental group rehearsals interspersed with full orchestral sessions. At the end of the day, participants will share the music they have learnt with an invited audience including parents and guardians.

To apply, please complete the application form: https://forms.gle/XUfma9BkvwqH8DWJ6

A variety of generous sponsors funds the course, therefore there is no cost to attend the programme but you must cover your travel costs to and from the College.

Applications are reviewed on an individual basis, based on skill level and available space for the instrument. We therefore recommend that you apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment and by no later than Monday 16th September.

Information for Parents and Guardians

Participants will be supervised by our team of professional musicians and teachers throughout the day. This includes staff from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, as well as UWC Atlantic College. All staff have an enhanced DBS check.

The day is spent in the glorious surroundings of UWC Atlantic College, a 12th- century castle set in 122 acres of coastal woodland, farmland and valley. It is an inspiring location that will form part of the experience, with most time spent in the
stunning Bradenstoke Hall and the St Donat’s Arts Centre. With our location being coastal, all participants are expected to adhere to the rules set out by staff and for their safety, remain within the boundaries outlined.

There will be a number of breakout opportunities throughout the day, but young musicians will always be supervised and under the direction of one or more of our team.

All parents and guardians are warmly invited to attend the final part of the day (5-6pm) when we will present a selection of music. Spaces are limited and must be booked via a link that will be shared with successful candidates. A maximum of 4 guests per candidate is permitted.

Refreshments are provided during the break to include tea, coffee, water and biscuits. Lunch and dinner are not included and there are no provisions to purchase food on site. Please bring a filled water bottle.

Applications are reviewed on an individual basis, based on skill level and available space for the instrument and applications will close when spaces are filled.

Successful candidates will receive a confirmation letter to confirm their place is secured on the course. Please allow up to 4 weeks for a decision.
