UWC Atlantic English Experience (AEE) in Detail

About

This intensive English language course is designed for Chinese students who may apply to a UWC College, international school, or further education institution abroad.

Morning lessons with experienced teachers focus on building English language proficiency through collaborative sessions that improve vocabulary and grammar skills, enabling students to create accurate and coherent responses to global questions in English. These sessions also include writing practice and preparation for the final examination, which gives students the opportunity to obtain a formal language qualification. The course includes 27 hours of morning lessons, along with an initial assessment and induction session.

In addition, students will participate in 10.5 hours of 21st Century Skills workshops that explore the UWC mission and values, helping them develop personal responses to interview questions and group activities. These workshops encourage discussion on contemporary issues such as artificial intelligence, climate action, and gender equity, connecting them to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

As a unique highlight, AEE students will attend 7 Special Lectures (UWC presentations) on various aspects of United World Colleges. These sessions feature insights from the admissions team, speeches by alumni, and talks by year-round Atlantic College lecturers.

The social programme

Although the primary emphasis of AEE is on developing academic skills, students will also have opportunities to enjoy the international campus environment and its facilities through evening activities and a comprehensive tour of the castle.

Additionally, students will participate in three day trips: one to the historic city of Bath, another to the Museum of Welsh Life, and a visit to Cardiff. On the last day of the course students will enjoy a full graduation ceremony and Gala dinner event.

The Accommodation

AEE students will stay in a dedicated on-campus house exclusively for AEE participants. The house is divided into two floors, one male and one female floor, and each room accommodates four students. The level of security on the campus is the same as during the main term time.

Most meals will be enjoyed alongside international students in the college’s medieval dining hall, which offers a magical “Harry Potter” atmosphere. Over-night and pastoral care is primarily managed by Atlantic Experience, with the added support of at least one Chinese speaking chaperone living in the student house.

AEE has a designated Educational Tour Operator in China who will guide you through the application, enrolment, terms and conditions, payment, flight options, and the visa process. They will help the students to prepare for the experience and be available to answer any questions before and during the course.

Transfers and Chaperone

On arrival in the UK and on return, students will be transferred by coach to and from the UWC Atlantic campus, which is approximately 3.5 hours from Heathrow airport. The students will be accompanied on their journey to and from the UK by Chinese- speaking chaperones who will also live on the campus during the course.

International Environment

AEE students will form part of the international campus environment, outside of the course and accommodation which is only for Chinese AEE students. There will be timetabled opportunities to integrate with students from other courses during evening activities such as the disco, quiz night, international talent show, Gala Dinner and the excursion to Cardiff. During free time students have semi-supervised access to the campus grounds and may enjoy finding independent opportunities to meet up with International students.

Outcome

AEE students will not only increase their English language level and gain an internationally recognised qualification, they will most importantly develop their familiarisation with global topics and become more confident in expressing their ideas in coherent English.
